My girlfriend likes LFS quite a bit, she still plays NFS though, working on that...

This game is a lot of fun, I've become quite addicted to it. As Ven said, some of the custom tracks are brilliant, some however, suck. I hate the ones that are just hops from one little piece of track to another, I like the fast tracks where you actually have to take a good line through the corner, not just get lucky with the jumps.
It's a good distraction from LFS, especially since I can't run LFS at school

The mic is plugged directly into the back of the comptuer. Sounds like I need a USB headset. And yes, Tristian, I can act as a DJ, and add some music to the races for everyone :P

The thing is, it's not like feedback you can hear, even with the speakers turned off, the people on the other end can hear every sound my system makes. It's sounding more and more like I just need to break down and buy a soundcard. :-\
Soundcard Problems

I have a Giga-Byte GA-8IPE1000PRO-G motherboard, and I'm having issues with the onboard AC '97 soundcard. Specifically, I get some weird feedback between my microphone and speakers. It makes it tough to use teamspeak of any other two way communication.

Basically, my microphone always comes out through my speakers, which gets annoying, but the most annoying part, any sound my system makes goes back through my microphone, about twice as loud, deafening anyone on the other side. This is some sort of electronic loopback, because even if I have my speakers turned all the way down, so I can't even hear anything, the person on the other end basically goes deaf. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm not really in the position to spend the money for a new soundcard.

This was not happening before, but I reformatted my system the other day, and now it's not working, I installed the same drivers that I had before, then went and looked, and found the newest drivers for the card, but it still has the same issue.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Quote from mrodgers :I know when I jump back into demo and run the turbo, I'm always grabbing for 6th gear on the back stretch. I never ran that car much before S2 licensing, so I just figure I'm use to the FZR that I normally drive. But I agree, it should just stay at a 5 speed for realism as I don't think it would have 6th in real life. (Do they still make the Starion, we had something similar in the States in the 80's, the Dodge Conquest, was it? Mitsubishi makes most of the motors in the small Dodge/Chrysler cars nowadays).

Both the Mitsubishi Starion and Chrysler Conquest were sold in the U.S. in Turbo and Nonturbo versions. They're pretty hard to come to come by though, I've been wanting one for a long time, but I can't seem to find one for sale.

I can't really compare, because I played S1 on an old slow computer with a non-ff joystick, but for S2, I built a nice fast computer and got a DFP. But I will say the overall "feel" is much better, as I did play S2 Demo on my old setup, and it still felt miles ahead of S1.

I have Forza and enjoy it quite a bit, sure it's not LFS, but it's not bad. The cars handle in a predictible manner, and actually seem to interact properly with the ground, which can't be said for a lot of driving games. I'd hardly call myself a fanboy, but I think it's quite fun and entertaining, and well worth the purchase price.

As you people can probably tell, I'm a shameless dog fanatic. Rumor's not a showdog, but I'm planning on getting one, and getting into showing for real. Unfortunately, dogs and cars are both very expensive hobbies, so I probably won't ever be able to retire
Meanwhile, I play on www.showdog.com It's like real dog showing, but much much cheaper

The show is actually produced by MPR and distributed by NPR. It's called a prarie home companion, and it's recorded about 30 minutes from my house.

Sounds like Intel SpeedStep to me, you should be able to disable it in power options. I can run LFS at 50 FPS on my 1.7 GHz IBM laptop just fine with SpeedStep off. It's under power management>advanced settings>CPU power management.

Note: It used to be called SpeedStep in the pre Centrino days, I'm not sure what it's called now.

<edit>I believe the CPU power management is an IBM tool, I'd have to look at my girlfriend's Toshiba Satellite to find it there, unfortunately, she's in Maryland visiting family for christmas right now :-/</edit>

There should just be an "LFS Benchmark" thread. I searched the forums, and this thread is all I can find that actually has the address to the site. It should probably be stickied too.

Quote from Shotglass :dunno about that ... the cars in lfs dont seem to care much at all whether your foot is on the gas or on the brake pedal in mid air
i havent tried that with any light car with heavy wheels though so im not entirely sure if its just the weight of the car that makes those movements hard to see or if lfs really doesnt simulate it

Right now the way the cars fly has more to do with the way the suspension compresses when they go off the jump, but I do think the rotational forces of the wheels are modeled.

Quote from Shotglass :Longish but very useful post.

I agree totally. LFS is the only racing "game" that I feel comfortable drifting in. I'm no drifter by any stretch of the imagination, but it's good fun sometimes when you're bored, but that's beside the point. LFS just feels -right- when you're sideways. The only other game that comes close is GPL, which some people would argue is still king, but again, I digress. People make a big deal about drifting in Gran Turismo, but I can't do it, it just feels too artificial, the cars don't ever seem to actually be driving on the track, I don't know how to describe it any better. The cars in LFS just seem so "planted" like they're actually interacting with the track, instead of just appearing to drive on it. IMO, the best example of this is when the cars get air. In LFS, if you go off a jump on a rallycross track, it just feels very organic, in something like Gran Turismo, you jump and land and say, "whoa, that felt odd..." Again, GPL is the only other sim that feels -right- the way the cars sit on the ground.

I don't really know what I'm saying, so I think I'll stop.
